2017 was another banner year for the certification division of the Rainforest Alliance. As we start the new year, we look back to recognize clients that celebrated major milestones in their sustainability work. This past year we were proud to recognize 35 clients that celebrated 15 and 20 years of working with the Rainforest Alliance certification division – RA-Cert. In addition to our 15 and 20-year anniversary clients, 186 clients achieved 10 years, and 226 clients marked 5 years of certification. In sum, these clients, together with the Rainforest Alliance, total centuries worth of work around the globe to drive more sustainable business.
These are just a selection of the clients that have made long term commitments to certification standards for over a decade. In their continued work with the Rainforest Alliance they have set the standard for sustainable business through their adoption of world-class certification standards.
In North America, 200 clients celebrated anniversaries in 2017, most notably 2 reached the 20-year mark, Aitkin County Land Department, and Bemis Manufacturing Company.
Aitkin County Land Department – in Aitkin, Minnesota, became the first county managed forest lands in the United States to be certified under the strict standards of the FSC®. Since October 30, 1997, over 222,000 acres of forestland, have been certified.
Bemis Manufacturing Company – a family-owned business that produces bathroom and health care products, headquartered in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, U.S.A. Bemis utilizes FSC recycled wood sources to produce wood toilet seats.
North American clients celebrating 15 years include:
Martin Sustainable Resources LLC dba RoyOMart – a forest management certificate with 182,500 certified hectares and Chain-of-Custody Certificate for plywood, oriented strand board and solid .
F&W Forestry Services, Inc.– based in Albany, Georgia, provides forestland management services for landowners and manages a 44,967 ha forest management group certificate.
Calvert Glulams – based in Vancouver, Washington, has more than 50 years of experience producing high quality glued laminated architectural beams.
Action Floor Systems, LLC – based in Mercer, Wisconsin, produces premium, maple hardwood floors.
Eggers Industries, Inc. – based in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, produces architectural flush and stile and rail doors, as well as plywood paneling and veneers.
Robbins, Inc. – based in Cincinnati, Ohio, produces flooring for sports venues, performing arts and stage flooring and residential hardwood flooring.
Patriot Timber Products, Inc. – based in Greensboro, North Carolina, specializes in the importation of hardwood lumber and panel products.
Northland Forest Products, Inc. – based in Kingston, New Hampshire, is a hardwood lumber processor and distributor, producing their own exclusive brand of hardwood lumber for markets in the United States and 26 countries around the world.
In the Mesoamerica region, we recognized 116 clients that achieved milestones ranging from 5 to 20 years of working with our certification team. Two of these clients celebrated 20-year anniversaries including Cooperativa Regional Agroforestales Colón Atlántida Honduras Limitada (COATLAHL) and The Program for Belize.
COATLAHL – a cooperative of 17 communities and over 80 members managing 17,815 FSC certified hectares in Honduras. Certification assures its customers that the wood used by the Cooperative to manufacture its furniture comes from responsibly managed forests.
The Program for Belize (PFB) – a Belizean, non-profit organization, established in 1988, to promote the conservation of the natural heritage and to promote wise use natural resources of Belize. PFB manages the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area (RBCMA), the largest private reserve and the second largest single protected area in Belize. Timber extraction occurs on 101,813 certified hectares of the RBCMA.
Mesoamerica clients celebrating 15+ years include several of our Ejidos, community managed forestry operations, in Mexico:
In Durango, Mexico: Ejido Vencedores, a forest management certificate with 21,343 hectares; Ejido San Pablo, a forest management certificate with 22,496 hectares; Ejido la Ciudad, a forest management certificate with 11,328 hectares; Ejido Salto de Camellones, a forest management certificate with 11,903 hectares; Ejido San Diego de Tezains, a forest management certificate with 41,946 hectares; Ejido La Victoria y Anexos, a forest management certificate with 9,997 hectares; Industrial Pinos Altos, processes lumber at their sawmill since 1969; Compañía Silvícola Chapultepec, a forest management certificate of 15,160 hectares, produces round wood for boards, moldings and furniture.
In Chihuahua, Mexico: Ejido La Trinidad, a forest management certificate with 45,026 hectares managed by a community operation.
In South America, 31 clients celebrated anniversaries ranging from 5 to 15 years in 2017, including 5 that reached 15 years:
Compañía Agrícola y Forestal El Alamo Ltda – a forest management certificate with 2,540 hectares of tree plantations have been FSC Certified since 2002. In 2017, the company achieved Rainforest Alliance Certification™ for its production of apples, grapes and blueberries, achieving the first dual certification for forestry and agricultural production in South America.
Compañía Chilena de Fósforos S.A. – based in Santiago, Chile, exports splints (impregnated and polished sticks for making matches), matchsticks, ice cream sticks, wooden spatulas for mixing paint, moldings, latticework doors and fruit to more than 22 countries. Established in 1913, the company boasts in its assets the highest volume and density of poplar plantations in Chile and South America.
Terciados y Elaboración de Maderas S.A. (TEMSA) – based in Santiago, Chile, specializes in the manufacture of wooden products, both for the food industry as well as products for the home and construction. TEMSA holds certifications for both its Copihue and Los Lagos plants.
INDUSTRIA FORESTAL CIMAL IMR S.A. – based in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, was the first Bolivian company to obtain FSC certification in 1996. CIMAL obtained FSC Chain-of-Custody in 2002, becoming the first forestry company in Bolivia that certifies all its processes of the production chain from the forest to the store shelve.
Forestal Anchile Ltda.– a forest management certificate with 58,533 hectares founded in Santiago, Chile in 1989. The operation manages mainly eucalyptus plantations being exported for chips to Japan and other Asian countries. The company also supplies raw materials to sawmills, pulp mills, board plants, in Chile.
In Asia Pacific, 44 clients across several countries celebrated 5 to 15-year anniversaries working with Rainforest Alliance regional certification team based in Bali, Indonesia. Eleven clients marked 10 years and 32 clients reached 5 years of certification. This includes ScanCom, which celebrated 15 years of certification.
ScanCom Vietnam Ltd – a leading player in the global outdoor furniture industry. Their mission is to create outstanding products that combine international design expertise with state-of-the-art production techniques and a proven commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility. ScanCom was a pioneer in using FSC certified hardwood, and today they use 100% FSC hardwood.
In Africa, 62 clients celebrated 5-year certification anniversaries, with several notable clients celebrating over 5 years:
Samartex Timber & Plywood Ltd – a leading socially responsible timber company founded in 1995 in Ghana and managing 150,308 ha of tropical forests. In addition to wood processing activities they develop value-added non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and downstream processing of wood pieces that would otherwise be considered waste into carvings.
Logs and Lumber Limited – a leading producer and exporter of wood products in Ghana. Founded in 1967, the company manages a certified area of 43,191 ha and produces lumber, moldings and veneer.
John Bitar Company Limited– specializes in the manufacture of various wood products from the finest tropical hard and softwoods. Established in 1955, the company manages a certified area of 38,800 hectares in Ghana.
As we celebrate these hundreds of milestones representing deep commitment from companies around the world, we are reminded of the Rainforest Alliance belief that we are better together, and that every day actions drive meaningful change. Companies like these are the first step, but we are all consumers, and by choosing Rainforest Alliance Certified© and FSC© Certified, we can all be sure our purchase decisions are part of the solution, not part of the problem.
